Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show draws close, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
